Gabriel Diggs Love Ibiza Profile

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your DJ career.

I've been a DJ for the past 10 years. As a DJ living in the United States you have to be versatile to make a living. Outside of Miami, dance music does not get a whole lot of support so I had to be able to play everything from Classic Rock to Pop, Hip Hop, 80's, Funk and Soul to make a living. It's really a good thing because it allowed me to develop my range as a DJ. I began producing professionally about 5 years ago and I'm working on my first studio album as we speak!

How about your music? How would you describe your sound/ style?

I would describe my style as being global. From the beginning of my career I developed a love for all good music regardless of genre. I think my parents had a big hand in that. If you were around my house growing up you would have heard everything from Earth Wind & Fire to Ce Ce Peniston to The Police. I pride myself on being able to play to a wide variety of crowds. One week I'll be in Brazil playing Electro House and Progressive, the next week I'll be in Los Angeles playing Hip Hop, Rock and 80's and the next I'm in Ibiza playing a Balearic mix. I just love to play great music period!

How did you get started with DJ'ing? Who were your earliest influences?

I was raised as a classical trumpet player and played in bands and ensembles right through college. Senior year I took a trip to study abroad in London, England. One night I ended up at a club called Bar Rhumba and I had an epiphany right there on the dance floor! Right then I knew that I wanted to be a professional DJ and producer. That was back in 1999. The rest as they say is history...

My earliest influences were Roni Size, Goldie, Gene Ferris and Pete Tong. I fell in love with Drum & Bass and used to watch and listen to Roni Size and The Full Cycle crew. The Reprazent album blew my mind. The Timeless album by Goldie changed my life as well. Later on my little brother introduced me to House music and I fell in love all over again. A good friend of mine in London also introduced me to Pete Tong's Essential Selection series. I learned to be a better DJ by listening to mix CD's from all of the artists I listed and also going out to see a lot of DJ's live.

Who on the scene influences or inspires you now?

There are so many DJ's and producers on the scene that influence and inspire me but if I had to name two I would pick Erick Morillo and Tiesto as being the biggest inspirations to me. They both work very hard and each has done so much to push the scene forward creatively and from a business perspective. I think to be a successful DJ and producer in todays world you've got to have both a creative mind and a mind for the business side of things as well.

When did you first play in Ibiza? Tell us a bit about it

I first played Ibiza in 2005. My good friend and I won a trip to Ibiza through OM Records and instead of vacationing we decided to make a DJ tour out of the trip! We were booked at Sugar Sea (now Kama Sushi) and Savannah. The night I played Savannah the president of Pacha happened to be at the bar! After my set he came up to me, shook my hand and told me it was one of the best sets he had ever heard. I was floored!

We're showcasing your latest mix on the site at the moment- tell us a bit about the mix?

The mix is a blend of Electro House, and Mash-Ups. I had a residency in Los Angeles and one night someone came up to me and asked me if they could have a copy of what I was playing. I use Traktor when I DJ so luckily all I had to do was push record. The entire mix was done live!

You're out in Ibiza this summer- what are your plans? What are you looking forward to?

My plans are to work hard, play hard, establish a few residencies and finish most of my album! I'd also like to see more of the Island this go round. I'll be staying in Ibiza for the entire season this year so hopefully there will be plenty of time to discover and enjoy the multitude of beautiful sights and sounds the Island provides! Maybe I'll even make it out to Formentera this year!

If you could give one bit of advice to a new DJ just starting out, what would it be?

Don't ever give up and never stop believing in yourself.

Any tips for Ibiza virgins heading out there for the first time this year?

Make sure you visit Aguas Blancas in the north of the Island. It's my favorite beach in Ibiza and one of the most beautiful in my opinion! If you're a DJ get over to Vinyl Club in Ibiza Town. They've got some of the best used vinyl in the world!

Quick fire questions...

Your favourite club

  • Space
Your favourite track at the moment
  • Armin Van Buuren ft. Jacqueline Govaert - Never Say Never (Omnia Remix)
If you could warm up for any DJ, who would it be?
  • It would have to be Tiesto or Erick Morillo!
