Hi Natalie, tell us a bit about yourself…
I'm 23, live in Manchester work for Chanel and have dj'd at most major venues in Manchester as well as recently playing at Pacha and The egg in London, I'm about to give it all up for a season in Ibiza!
How long have you been dj’ing and what do you play?
Professionally, just over a year. I play mainly funky house and vocal electro although I am getting more into Tech-house at the moment. In just a year I am lucky to say I have dj'd with some amazing djs such as K-klass, Soul Avengerz,The Hoxton Whores, Oliver Lang, David Dunne and Andy Daniels (Hed Kandi) to name a few.
How did you get started with DJ'ing? Who were your earliest influences?
I had been a 'party dj' for a few years when I met David Dunne at a radio gig in Manchester, after a conversation with him about becoming a 'club dj' I decided to enrol on a dj course at Manchester Midi School. Passed that in July 2006 and it wasn't until July 2007 when I was approached on www.myspace.com/nat_bro by DjOz to play for his night RUDE based in Oldham that I played my first small gig.
My main influence is my Dad, he isn't a dj but I grew up listening to the music he played such as Bowie, Massive Attack and The Smiths so I was a huge music fan from a very young age. My main dj influence is David Dunne, he is my mentor and has been there for me with much needed advice from the very start.
Why do you think there’s not more female Dj’s on the house circuit? Have you faced any challenges being a girl in a male orientated scene?
I think it is much more difficult for females to prove themselves in such a male orientated scene. Ive been pretty lucky up to now. Some of my closest friends are male djs so I suppose I'm well looked after if I get any comments like the usual 'she only gets gigs because she has tits' they are there to set the record straight- excuse the pun!
Its nice to know I have the support of other djs sticking up for me and I love it when other djs say 'ahhh you're alright' usually followed with.. 'for a girl'
We’re showcasing your latest mix on the site at the moment- tell us a bit about the mix
I wanted to create a mix for all to enjoy.. Its very Ibiza for me, from poolside chill-out to main set anthems. All classics and all great tracks!
When did you first visit Ibiza?
Back in 2002- I was 17 on my first holiday without family, I went on an 18-30's for 2 weeks with 2 lads!
You played at Plastik last summer, how was that?
Plastik is a great venue, I played pre parties for Hed Kandi and Garlands and it was by far one of the highlights of my holiday, such an up for it crowd and Paul the resident dj is such a lovely person- makes you feel at ease. Hopefully going to play there again this year!
What have you got lined up for the 2009 season? When are you heading out to Ibiza?
Well before I get there I need to complete my new tune! I am co-producing a track with Russ Morgan of K-klass so it should be finished before I leave for Ibiza. I have a few gigs lined up and one I'm really lucky to have and looking forward to is Charlys Angelz which is an all female dj night run by Vicky Devine of Judgement Sundays. I know I will be pr-ing most of the season as I am just going over to promote myself so all gigs are a bonus. I will be flying home for one weekend to play at Manchester International Festival on the 11th July but will be going straight back to Ibiza the following day.
What Ibiza club or party would you most like to play?
Ultimately-Hed Kandi although as a venue I would love to play for Pacha in the future!
What parties are you most looking forward to this summer? (apart from your own gigs of course!)
I'm looking forward to going DC10 as Ive never been with it being closed last year... Hed Kandi and Defected parties are always my favourite nights. As I'm getting more into Tech-house I'm also looking forward to some parties I wouldn't usually go to.
Quick fire questions...
Your favourite club?
- Mansion in Miami-Just been to the MWMC and its a gorgeous club.
Your hot track for the summer?
- K-klass-Love Alibi
Vinyl or CD?
- Although I was taught on vinyl I have had to move with times so its now cds.
Pre-party or after party?
- After party without a doubt!
Manchester or Ibiza?
- Argh!! Ask me in October ;-)
