Looking Back on the Ibiza Summer 2011
Posted by: Isabelle123 in Untagged on Oct 4, 2011
My, what a summer it has been. We said hello to MTV who, this year, lost their ‘Beefa virginity. The uber cool, and sickeningly luxurious Ushuaia opened it doors, not only to the public, but also to the superstars of the music industry. Urban music shook the island, and people’s opinions. We welcomed new nights and new venues, but we also said goodbye to The Streets, who played their last ever gig at Ibiza Rocks. Lets have a deeper look at 5 things that rocked our G-string this summer:
1. MTV
We knew they wouldn’t sneak in through the back door and subtly join the party. MTV did what MTV does best, it made a lot of noise. Although providing some strong dance line ups in the Main Room of Amnesia, the focus laid heavily on the acts in the Terrace: Snoop Dogg, Kelis, Mika, Robyn and Duran Duran’s surprise hip-hop replacement 50 Cent. MTV most certainly put their footprint on the island, and are set to return next year to do it all again!
2. Ushuaia
If James Bond was a DJ, he’d stay here. 2011 saw the grand opening of the new-look Ushuaia beach club and hotel. Not only being the sexiest hotel on the island, Ushuaia also boasted some of the coolest, most elite daytime parties of the season. Swedish House Mafia, Sasha and Defected all held residencies, whilst we saw some jaw-dropping moments from funksters Kool & the Gang, 80s electro masters Human League and most recently good ol’ Tiesto, who played a special gig earlier this month.
3. Sankeys
The legendary Manchester nightclub Sankeys opened it’s doors in Playa d’en Bossa this Summer and brought with it some amazing new nights, Carnival, Monza and probably most talked about Full On Ferry, Ferry Corsten’s love child of a night bringing the very best trance line ups to Playa d’en Bossa.
4. Godskitchen Boombox at Privilege
The Godskitchen Boombox arrived in Ibiza for the first time ever this year, playing two dates at Privilege, with an impressive trance line-up. Back in July, this Midland’s based dance brand brought us a striking and huge structure, giving the DJ an immense platform to play from, and giving the audience an amazing audio-visual spectacular to watch. Sander Van Doorn, Cosmic Gate and Aly & Fila were just some of the names to play this incredible set up.
5. 10 Years of Carl Cox
So we said Hola! to a fair amount of new things this year, but what about celebrating those much loved nights that have done us so well in the past? Carl Cox’s night The Revolution celebrated 10 years at superclub Space this year, with the man himself playing an epic 10-hour set at the opening party. This night has clearly stood the test of time, coming up against all the different phases and genres which have influenced Ibiza, and we hope it goes strong for another ten years to see it’s 20th Anniversary in 2021…although a 20 hour set might be pushing it?
