Eddie Halliwell Interview

We spoke to the massively popular DJ, Eddie Halliwell, who gave us some insight into why he's started to produce his own music, his favourite venues on the White Isle and his love for his iPad 2, oh and Vietnam! Read more about the trance, techno, house and electro mastermind here!

Love Ibiza (LI): Your debut Single ‘Neon’ has just been released; how did you come to decide to start producing your own music?

Eddie Halliwell (EH): I always set out to be DJ. When I first came through as a DJ, the production and DJ worlds were completely separate entities to me because I was on the road touring all the time, where as a producer years ago you had to put so much time in the studio at home which would have been very difficult for me. I never wanted to be one of those DJ's who sat in a studio 5 days a week and then gigged just at weekends...but now with advances in technology the equipment I am using to enhance my DJ performance is also production based software, so I can not only now use this equipment to enhance my performance on stage, but create my sounds for production whilst touring - so for me the 2 worlds have now merged.

LI: You’ve just performed at Global Gathering; how did the crowds react to your new track ‘Neon’?

EH: Amazing - I have road tested my new tracks all over the world and been overwhelmed at the response.

LI:  You are playing at a number of parties in Ibiza throughout the summer season, including Cream and Judgement Sundays. However, could you tell us what your favourite venue in Ibiza is and why?

EH: Venue wise, Amnesia is amazing. I have played the main room and terrace and it's an incredible club for the DJ and clubbers. In terms of Judgement Sundays, this event never fails on atmosphere - it's nuts in there! It's very rare I get any spare time in Ibiza, but when I have done in the past I've made a point of going to Space and Ushuaia - both immense venues.

LI: You play tracks from across a broad musical spectrum, such as trance to techno, house and electro. Can you tell us the name of your top 3 tracks at the moment?

EH: Tracks doing the damage on the dancefloor for me at the moment have to be:

3. Nari & Milani - Kendo [Size]

LI:  It’s been said that you’re an innovator when it comes to using technology. What is the best piece of equipment that you use in or outside of the studio?

EH: It was my Jazzmutant Lemur for a good few years, but it now it's my iPad 2 for enabling me to reach new heights creatively and run around with it on stage!

LI: You will be performing in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in September. What can you tell us about the dance scene over there at the moment?

EH: Amazing, especially Vietnam, which is being tiled by some as the new clubbing destination.

LI: What else have you got lined up for us in the coming months that we can look forward to?

EH: I am releasing another track from my new 'Elements' series in the next few months, as well as releasing the first instalment of my new 'ED-IT' productions: 'Eddie Halliwell Presents ED-IT-1, the first in a series of tracks released with parts enabling people to remix and re-edit the tracks in the studio or live on stage in their DJ sets, bringing the world of production and DJing together. People can download the parts from Beatport then submit remixes via Soundcloud for possible release. I've got loads of great events coming up all over the world, including recording my 8th Radio 1 Essential mix at Creamfields this weekend, along with other ED-IT shows in the pipeline - it's full steam ahead as usual.
