A Winter Holiday Wonderland in Ibiza

Ibiza might not be the most obvious choice for a winter break but the much loved Balearic island actually has a lot more to offer than just the beaches and nightlife that have made it such a popular sun seeker destination. When the summer crowds head for home, the island takes on a whole new life and those who are looking for a temperate winter getaway, good food and wine, stylish accommodation and lots to do will find Ibiza fits the bill perfectly.
Winter holidays in Ibiza have one huge advantage over other European destinations and that’s the weather. The average winter temperature in Ibiza is 15 degrees Celsius but you may find – especially in early winter and early spring – that temperatures actually climb to more like 25 degrees Celsius, particularly when the sun is out. Although there can be rain during this time, if the locals are to be believed this will never last longer than three days at a time! There’s also plenty of sunshine, particularly compared to other European destinations, so a winter holiday in Ibiza offers a great cure for the winter blues.
Contrary to popular belief, Ibiza doesn’t actually shut down during the winter months and there are still plenty of options when it comes to hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs. If you want to book a package holiday between October and April then companies like Thomas Cook Ibiza holidays offer some great deals out of the peak season.
There are some resorts that are more lively than others during the colder part of the year and if you’re still looking for plenty of action during your trip then it’s a good idea to head to these hotspots. Ibiza Town offers year round entertainment and beach resorts like Talamanca, Santa Eulalia and Playa d’en Bossa remain open and lively – although not to the same intense standards of the summertime, which might be a relief for many!
Unless you opt for a really remote spot on the island you’re highly unlikely to find that you’re without drinking and dining options as there’s a huge range of restaurants that remain open during winter, from tapas bars, to burger joints and pizza places. Supermarkets have an excellent selection of fresh produce and cheap meal options if you’re on a budget and hotels that take winter travelers will keep their restaurants and snack bars open. If you happen to be visiting during or after December then Ibiza’s annual Degusta festival is worth investigating as some of the best restaurants on the island offer special deals on dining from December for five months as part of the event. When it comes to nights out, superclub Pacha is the only one of the larger clubs that stays open all year round, hosting extra special nights for special occasions, such as Halloween and New Year’s Eve. However, there are still plenty of nightlife options, from tipsily dancing the night away in a bar in Playa d’en Bossa, to discovering flamenco or jazz in a little club in Ibiza Town.
Although many people opt for a winter holiday in Ibiza to take advantage of empty beaches for romantic windswept walks and some serious peace and quiet, fun activities are still plentiful. There are mountain biking tours, horseback riding in the north of the island, bowling and go karting and in the early winter months the sea is still warm enough for water sports, such as wind surfing and body boarding. For those visitors looking to flex their credit cards, there is shopping galore, from the designer boutiques of Ibiza Town, to the local markets where you can buy everything from Christmas presents to local leather products and food.
If you are considering winter holidays in Ibiza then you will not be disappointed by the range of activities and amenities on offer. Whether you’re looking to party at Pacha and drink cocktails by the sea, or simply enjoy a well-earned rest, the island has something to offer everyone.
